Branches Of Willow

I have seen children darker than honey
skinny young children at play in the drift
cutting off switches from branches of willow
beating the water to charm the small fish

they drop tiny stones into the river
they count every one as it falls from the clay
for those who have held them and those who have loved them
those who have left them and those who have stayed

come see the tugboat coming before me
come see the water that swallows the wharf
come see the corpses of ships gone forgotten
come follow me down to the shore

I once heard a songbird taunt he the devil
the devil he rose and he clipped the bird's wing
now the bird sings as it swims in the water
oh devil anon I'm indifferent to thee

come see the tugboat coming before me
come see the water that swallows the wharf
come see the corpses of ships gone forgotten
come follow me down to the shore

if I had a hound and a little stone rooster
then I would be happy and I would be rich
but all that I have are these branches of willow
so I go to the water and catch the small fish

come see the tugboat coming before me
come see the water that swallows the wharf
come see the corpses of ships gone forgotten
come follow me down to the shore
